For our final project in my Technology class, we were to make a Wiki and create a lesson plan to use in the classroom. If you click on the picture to the left, it will take you to my Wiki. I made my Wiki for a Science classroom setting. My goal for the wiki is to have a place where my students can add notes and build on what we talk about in class. I want my students to build their won online textbook, very much like the one my professor's students have made here. The Wiki is no where near done, and hopefully my students will always be adding to it. On the teachers page, there is a lesson plan to get the project rolling. However, there would be some changes if using it in a real classroom. Instead of giving each group of students a subcategory, I would assign them their own page. Or have them do it all on a Google document, then add it to the Wiki when finished because if they are all trying to work on the same page at once, something is bound to go wrong. When working on their Google Document, I have instructed them to write in different colors, that way they are never deleting another students work from the document and after they are done, the teacher can see who participated by doing what. Also, I don't want them just adding text, so for the lesson, I am having them add a Web 2.0 tool to their project. This helps them understand the use of such tools and helps them understand what I am looking for in the Wiki.
I want this Wiki to be a place where they can show their interests in Science, a place where they can build on what we know from class, a place to have fun. If I were a student and my teacher had us create a Wiki, I would have loved it, I would never need to carry that heavy textbook home, and I could read and learn in a visual and creative way!
Now I will say that Wikis can be frustrating they are not as colorful as sites such as Weebly, like my blog, you cannot make drastic changes to colors, style, font. But remember, The Wiki is where the student gget to add their thoughts/knowledge, my blog is for me, so I shouldn't care how pretty the Wiki is if it is searving its purpose.
